. Recovery in the first 24-48 hours
Expect to experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the immediate hours and days after rhinoplasty. We place a splint to protect your nose, and sometimes apply internal nasal packing to support healing. You may also have some congestion, as your nasal passages swell following the procedure.
Most people find the pain manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter medication. We recommend you keep your head elevated and apply cold compresses around — not directly on — your nose to help minimize swelling.
During the first week, you’ll need to rest and avoid any strenuous activity. Between days five and seven, you’ll return to our office to have your nasal splint and any sutures removed.
You’ll notice that swelling and bruising around the eyes starts to subside near the end of the week, but you may still have some puffiness. Usually, patients can return to non-strenuous work or school after one week.
By the end of week two, you’ll notice a significant reduction in bruising. You’ll also begin to notice improvements in nasal function and appearance.
Although the external swelling is significantly less noticeable, internal healing continues. We encourage you to do light activities, such as walking, but advise that you still avoid heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, and any risk of nasal trauma.
By the one-month mark, most visible swelling subsides, and your nose will start to take on a more refined shape. However, it’s not unusual for minor residual swelling — especially at the nasal tip — to persist for several months.
You may be cleared for normal exercise between weeks four and 12, but always clarify if we think you’re ready for high-impact activities.
Rhinoplasty results continue to improve over time, with your nose’s shape becoming fully visible within six to 12 months. It can take up to a year for the final shape of your nose to settle, especially when it comes to the tip’s definition.
Make sure you follow all postoperative instructions carefully to support proper healing. You’ll need to avoid blowing your nose for at least two weeks.
Proper hydration and a healthy diet promote tissue repair. Avoid direct sun exposure, which can contribute to swelling and discoloration.
Remember that healing takes time, and the best results come from allowing your body to recover fully.
Recovering from rhinoplasty takes patience and care, but the results are worth it — a beautifully refined nose that enhances your natural look.
