Dermal Fillers Q&A

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that add volume to your skin. They fill in areas that have lost fat, volume, and elasticity with age. Fillers can smooth wrinkles and lines, contour areas of the skin that lack definition, and enhance specific facial features.

With multiple dermal filler options at his office, Dr. Elnekaveh addresses many areas of the face and body, including:

  • Cheeks
  • Lips
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines (around the mouth)
  • Tear troughs (under-eye hollows)
  • Jawline
  • Temples
  • Chin
  • Hands
  • Décolletage (neck and chest)
  • Scars or depressions in the skin
  • Knees

Dr. Elnekaveh develops your personalized treatment plan that targets multiple concerns in one appointment.

Are dermal fillers the same as Botox®?

While dermal fillers and Botox are both popular wrinkle treatments, they’re different types of products. Dermal fillers plump up the skin with gel-like substances. Botox targets the muscles beneath the skin to prevent movement, allowing wrinkles to soften.

Fillers work best on static wrinkles, which tend to form in the lower half of the face due to volume loss. Neuromodulators like Botox are ideal for dynamic wrinkles caused by expression. These lines usually develop around the forehead, in between the eyebrows, and around the eyes (crow’s feet).

Dr. Elnekaveh can combine both treatments to address a wide range of aging concerns in your upper and lower face.

Are there different types of dermal fillers?

There are multiple types of fillers, such as:

Hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®, are the most common types. HA is a lubricating substance your body already produces to moisturize your skin. Injecting HA fillers back into your skin adds natural-looking volume to hollow or sunken areas. HA fillers deliver instant results and last for up to a year.

Collagen stimulators

Radiesse®, Sculptra®, and other collagen stimulators plump the skin over time by kick-starting collagen production. Collagen is a protein that keeps your skin firm and responsive. Restoring lost collagen improves skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Radiesse offers instant results and continues to improve over time. It can last 15 months or longer. Sculptra’s results take longer to develop but can last for 2-5 years.
