Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is a popular injectable treatment that addresses fine lines, wrinkles, and many other cosmetic concerns. It’s the first FDA-approved injectable for dynamic wrinkles, which result from repeated muscle movement.

Botox injections take only a few minutes and the results last for several months without maintenance, offering a quick, subtle solution for unwanted lines and wrinkles.

How does Botox work?

Botox is a neurotoxin that affects nerve communication to the muscles. When used in tiny doses, Botox can block the nerve signals that muscles receive, stopping them from contracting. The affected muscle then stays relaxed, allowing the skin on top to soften for a smoother appearance.

What can Botox treat?

Botox primarily treats dynamic wrinkles, which tend to form in the upper face and around the mouth. Repeated expressions, like frowning and smiling, cause these lines to form and eventually settle into the skin. Common wrinkles that Botox treats include:

  • Crow’s feet (around the eyes)
  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar lines (between the eyebrows)
  • Bunny lines (on the nose)
  • Marionette lines (around the mouth)
  • Vertical lip lines (smoker’s lines)

Botox can also provide a nonsurgical lip lift, reduce enlarged masseter muscles in the jaw, deliver a nonsurgical brow lift, smooth horizontal neck bands, and reshape the nose without surgery.

I’m getting Botox. What can I expect?

After discussing your concerns and goals with Dr. Elnekaveh, he determines the most effective areas to inject Botox. He may apply a topical numbing cream for your comfort. The injections take only 15 minutes and are relatively comfortable compared to other injectables, like dermal fillers or Kybella®.

Mild swelling, redness, and bruising at the injection sites should subside within a couple of days. Botox takes about seven days to fully settle and deliver full results.

How long does Botox last?

Botox results usually last for about 3-4 months before muscle movement returns in the area. You can return to Dr. Elnekaveh’s office to refresh your results once the medication wears off. He may recommend maintenance treatments 2-4 times a year, depending on your age, wrinkle depth, and other factors.
